Full-time clinical training in Birmingham
MSc in Clinical Periodontics
Three years full time, hybrid, based on our Birmingham campus. You spend three days a week in supervised clinical training, with up to two face-to-face teaching blocks a year and weekly online sessions between them. Clinical training is available only to dentists who already hold full GDC registration, as the College cannot offer or facilitate temporary registration.
How the programme runs
Simulation first, then supervised clinic
Every programme option shares the same core didactic teaching, combining theory with hands-on work in our simulation facilities. What separates this route is the extent of supervised clinical training: three days a week, for three years, treating patients under expert supervision.
Built on the GDC Specialty Curriculum
The programme delivers didactic teaching aligned with the relevant GDC Specialty Curriculum, supporting practitioners to strengthen their clinical decision-making, practical and clinical skills and research.
Three supervised clinical days every week
Three days a week of supervised clinical training, across three years, treating patients under expert supervision at the CoMD clinic in Birmingham.
Simulation first, then supervised clinic
You work through techniques in the Phantom Head Suite and the College's simulation facilities before moving to supervised patient care.
For medically complex patients
Periodontal management of patients with diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other systemic conditions is taught as core content, not an aside.
Full GDC registration from the start
Applicants must already hold full registration with the GDC. Clinical training is available only to students who already hold permanent GDC registration. The College is unable to offer or facilitate temporary GDC registration.

It does not confer specialist status and the College makes no specialist-recognition claim for this programme.
I qualified outside the UK. Can I do the clinical training?
Only if you already hold full GDC registration. Clinical training is available only to students who already hold permanent GDC registration. The College is unable to offer or facilitate temporary GDC registration. Clinical training takes place at the CoMD clinic in Birmingham.

A BDS or equivalent from a recognised institution, registration in good standing with a recognised dental regulatory body such as the GDC, evidence of English language proficiency (international applicants: equivalent to IELTS 7 with no component below 6, and two satisfactory references including one academic.
