The three-year, part-time programme is designed for dental practitioners who wish to advance their subject knowledge. You will receive didactic teaching with hands-on simulation, with the option to work on live patients if you are GDC registered.

How the part-time route works
Weekly online sessions plus up to two teaching weeks a year in Birmingham, with a separate with-clinic option for dentists holding permanent GDC registration.

Aligned with the GDC Specialty Curriculum
The programme delivers didactic teaching aligned with the relevant GDC Specialty Curriculum, supporting practitioners to strengthen their clinical decision-making, practical and clinical skills and research.
Study without leaving your practice
Hybrid delivery across three years, with weekly online sessions and up to two teaching weeks a year at our Birmingham campus. You carry on seeing patients throughout.
A separate with-clinic option
Alongside this programme the College runs MSc in Orthodontics (with clinic) at £14,500 a year, which adds one day of supervised clinical training a month at the CoMD clinic in Birmingham. Clinical training is available only to students who already hold permanent GDC registration. The College is unable to offer or facilitate temporary GDC registration.

Common questions
Who is this course for, and what do I need to apply?
Dentists in practice who want to take on more complex orthodontic work. You need a BDS or equivalent from a recognised institution, registration in good standing with the GDC or an equivalent international regulator, evidence of English language proficiency (IELTS 7, with no component below 6, and two satisfactory references including one academic.
Can I keep working while I study?
Yes. That is the point of the part-time route. Delivery is hybrid across three years, with online teaching and up to two teaching weeks a year in Birmingham.
Will I be treating patients on this programme?
Not on this option. Practical work is done on simulation under supervision. The College runs a separate with-clinic option at £14,500 a year that adds one day of supervised clinical training a month at the CoMD clinic. Clinical training is available only to students who already hold permanent GDC registration. The College is unable to offer or facilitate temporary GDC registration.
How much is it, and what does the fee cover?
£11,000 a year without clinics, or £14,500 a year on the with-clinic option. The fee covers the taught programme and the simulation teaching. Travel to the Birmingham teaching weeks is not included.
Where is it taught, and what happens after I register?
Online, plus teaching weeks at the College of Medicine & Dentistry campus on Colmore Circus in central Birmingham. Once you register your interest a Recruitment Officer calls you to go through entry requirements and the application.
