Periodontics in depth, three years part-time
The three-year, part-time programme is designed for dental practitioners who wish to advance their subject knowledge in periodontics. You will receive didactic teaching with hands-on simulation, delivered through weekly online sessions plus up to two teaching weeks a year in Birmingham, with the option to work on live patients if you are GDC registered. £11,000 a year without clinics, or £14,500 a year with clinics. Starts September 2026.

With optional supervised clinical training delivered at CoMD clinic in Birmingham, the programme offers a flexible pathway for GDC-registered clinicians seeking high-quality postgraduate development without committing to full-time study.
Aligned with the GDC Specialty Curriculum
The programme delivers didactic teaching aligned with the relevant GDC Specialty Curriculum, supporting practitioners to strengthen their clinical decision-making, practical and clinical skills and research.
Taught around a working week
Core theory is delivered through weekly online sessions, so the programme fits around a full clinical diary. You stay in practice for all three years.
Up to two teaching weeks a year in Birmingham
Hands-on teaching is concentrated into campus blocks, working in the Phantom Head Suite and the College's simulation facilities, including a fully equipped surgical room.
Optional supervised clinical training
GDC-registered clinicians can opt in to supervised clinical sessions at the CoMD clinic in Birmingham, one day a month, taking the fee to £14,500 a year. Clinical training is available only to those who already hold permanent GDC registration.

Can I keep working while I study?
Yes. The programme is designed for clinicians who stay in practice. Theory is delivered online and hands-on teaching is concentrated into up to two campus weeks a year.
Will this make me a specialist?
The programme delivers didactic teaching aligned with the relevant GDC Specialty Curriculum, supporting practitioners to strengthen their clinical decision-making, practical and clinical skills and research. It does not confer specialist status, and the College makes no claim that it provides the volume of supervised clinical experience required for specialist recognition in the UK.
Do I treat patients on the part-time course?
Part-time students who are GDC registered can opt in to clinical sessions, delivered at the CoMD clinic in Birmingham. Clinical training is available only to those who already hold permanent GDC registration.
What do I need to apply?
A BDS or equivalent from a recognised institution, registration in good standing with a recognised dental regulator such as the GDC, English at GCSE grade C or equivalent (international applicants: IELTS 7 with no component below 6, and two satisfactory references including one academic.
What does the fee actually cover?
£11,000 a year without clinics, or £14,500 a year with clinics. It covers the taught programme and the simulation teaching. Travel to the Birmingham teaching weeks is not included.
